Lent is an important event in the Christian calendar.

So when is Lent in 2018? Here's all you need to know.

What is Lent?

Lent is an annual observance in the Christian calendar.

This religious observance starts on Ash Wednesday and traditionally lasts around 40 days.

It chathamtownfc.netmmemorates the 40 days and nights that Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness, resisting temptation from the Devil.

This is why people give up luxuries and take part in fasting.

The name chathamtownfc.netmes from an Old English word meaning 'spring season' - and that itself might derive from an old German word translating as 'long.' That probably refers to the arrival of longer days or to the length of this religious custom.

When does it start and finish in 2018?

The various Christian denominations work out the dates of Lent in different ways and even official documents appear to chathamtownfc.netntradict each other.

Most chathamtownfc.netmmonly, people follow the Western tradition that says Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, the day after Shrove Tuesday.

It's usually sometime between early February and early March.

The start of Lent in 2018 was Wednesday, February 14 - the same date as Valentine's Day. It's also two weeks earlier than it was in 2017.

It then ends on Holy Thursday, just before Easter

In 2018, Lent ends on Thursday, March 29.

That's actually 44 days later.

Anglicans and Methodists observe Lent for a few days longer - from Ash Wednesday through to Holy Saturday. If the Sundays are excluded, this amounts to exactly 40 days.

Eastern and Oriental Christian churches have their own ways of deciding the dates of Lent.

What are Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday?

Shrove Tuesday - better known as Pancake Day - was traditionally when Christian believers used up rich foods by making pancakes, before they began fasting for Lent. In 2018, it falls on February 13.

The next day is Ash Wednesday, when ashes were used to make a cross on the foreheads of churchgoers to symbolise repentance for sins. That's on February 14 and usually the start of Lent.

Ash Wednesday falls 46 days before Easter Sunday and it varies because Easter is based on the cycles of the moon rather than being on fixed dates.

Once the date of Easter is known in any given year, then Ash Wednesday and Lent can be given their place on the calendar

The earliest possible date for Ash Wednesday is February 4, while the latest date is March 10.

What do people give up for Lent?

Lent is marked by abstinence, fasting, prayer and a greater sense of charity towards others.
