Electrons are placed about each atom so the the octet dominance is obeyed. Since S is a third row element can accommodate much more than 8 valence electrons.

Resonance Structures #1-#3 are much more stable due to less charge separation - even though the S atom has much more than 8 electrons (expanded octet) - compare to structure #4. Structure #4 is less stable since of bigger charge separation.
