About the Origin of the Song and the movie short "A Song Is Born"

Robert Kimball and Steve Nelson quote Carmichael as saying,

For a while, before Paramount gave it to Clinton, the best use the song got was by the vocal coach , a man named Siegal who used it to test the vocal cords of aspiring contract players. Anthony Quinn was on the lot then, and Frank and I heard him sing it so many times before it was even published that by the time it was a hit, we were sick of it (Kimball and Nelson, p. 39).
